Fountain Square illin'

Looking at these pictures brings all types of nostalgia. Fountain Square used to seem so flippin' huge, and now it's... not. lol

Want your bike fixed? Go here. The axle on my back wheel snapped last Saturday... Luckily, it was right in front of this bike shop. Irony much!

Murphy Art Center!

I really dig perspective shots. It's not too shabby considering I use a GE A1050. Me likey.

Between Indy Swank and the Gallery.

Failed perspective shot. I diggs though.

The fountain is being replaced by a remake of Lady Spray, a water nymph statue that once stood there in the early 20th century. I'm kinda missin the Pioneer Family already. =[

I ride the 14 IndyGo religiously. My favorite shot of the night.

I got papers to write, cars to find, cameras to buy, poetry to memorize, meetings to schedule, and a job to work. I'm outty like 5000 (corny, but my pops says it all the time) xP

PS: The quality looks strange, not because my camera sucks, but because I had to shrink them to avoid them getting cut off. Hit up my fb for better quality.

Back alley art

Beautiful back alley art right in the heart of Fountain Square. I'm not positive, but I believe that these paintings were done by artists at the Murphy Art Center across the street.

If you look on the far right side of the picture, you can see that someone tried to tag "40" over the character's face. Why would someone deface this piece of art? Oh... wait... Fountain Square (although filled with art, culture, and class) has a plethora of gangs and such runnin' the streets. Fuckin' lames.

I was headed down to Fountain Square on my bike the other day to meet up with some poets for a writing session at the Shelby Street Cafe.
I'll introduce you to them in a later post.
They're dopeness in human form!
Anyway, I took a turn down Virgina Ave and saw a short cut through an alley. This is what I found.
There were 2 or 3 more paintings, but these are the ones I could take before my battery died. I'm goin' back tomorrow to meet up w/ them again, and I'll add more pics of the art work.

"So busy trying to be gods that we forgot how to be humans. Or, so busy trying to be human that we forgot how to be gods."

Please pause the music gadget

"So we walk around with our fears stapled to our face, and our secrets dance in our caskets."

Whether you watch this video once, or multiple times, please take time to close your eyes and listen to his words. B Yung is a true wordsmith. One can easily appreciate his talent as a writer, as well as his performance. Dude goes in. Period.

@ Shelby and Bates: Graffiti Wall

I needed to clear my mind yesterday, so I took a walk down north Shelby (opposite Fountain Square towards downtown) and spotted this dopeness. I drive past it all the time, but this time I had my camera by my side! My camera isn't anything special. It's a GE A1050. $75 got me some dope pics, so I can't complain. I'd love to have a Cannon SLR glued to my hip, but I'm too broke for that ish. This wall of graffiti stretches much further that you can see in the picture. I'm not sure who the artists are, but their work is amazing.

I'm headed back today to take some more pictures. Until then, I gotta finish writing these grant proposals and call Donald to get my flight information for this week in check. I'm a travelin' man.

Take your shoes off, and chill a while...

This blog is present for many reasons, all of which may appear pointlessly layered and complex, but I'll shoot it straight for my readers... I want to document my journey as an artist, and appreciate my city.

It's not as simple as it seems. I can't properly articulate how I intend to go about this, but I'll give it a try:

It took me 19 years to learn how to appreciate this city. My city. I hated this place for a long time. It always felt as if opportunity was fleeting... as if my dreams could only become realities elsewhere. I'm slowly learning that appreciation comes with involvement. With that said, I hope to become a predominant part of Indianapolis's art scene.

I'm a performance poet, and I often travel outside of Indianapolis to perform. I don't attend local open mics often, and that really depresses me. It's not because I'm not welcome, but I choose not to. It always seemed like I needed to LIVE in NYC, Chi-Town, or LA to become an established artist.
Gregg Deboor, a good friend of mine had a little discussion about this previously. He said to me "If one can't succeed in his or her home town, then how can one succeed in the world? Our roots are there for a reason man." His words resonated deeply, and I had to do some soul searching. If I get love from other cities, why not support my own?

This blog isn't all about ME or MY journey as an artist... I hope to showcase ALL of the talent that Indianapolis has to offer. Anywhere from tattoo artists to classically trained dancers... local cooks, to hip-hop artists. There is no limit, and I intend to give non-Indianapoliseans a glimpse into our culture, and our future. Indianapolis... I got you- I got us.
I hope to let this blog serve as a journal as well. Although I'll make posts about artists and events, I want to give you all the opportunity to see into the mind of Devon.
